WHAT’S IN A NAME?
HELP NAME THE NEW
MONTICELLO CAMPUS COMMUNITY!
Get your creative brain going and help us find the perfect and timeless name for the new George Wythe University campus community in Monticello, Utah.
The “New Urban” designed community will surround, enhance and support the beautiful University campus at the foot of the Blue Mountains.
Here is some food for thought as you contemplate: what’s in a name?
MISSION
The Community’s desire is to become a “light on the hill”; a model village for sustainable living, building and working practices; a thoughtful return to the concepts that made the former small, “community-centric” town a well-loved place to live, work and raise a family. These same concepts helped to create a few very special communities around the world that have flourished for more than three hundred years and continue to be well loved and inhabited today!
The Community’s Mission is to build a “Living Legacy.” We acknowledge providence in all things, promote self-sustaining practices for earth and people, inspire and cultivate the love of learning, nurture public virtue and uphold the principles of liberty for all to enjoy today and in future generations.
MISSION CONCEPTS
SENSE OF PURPOSE thru implementation of a world-class education at George Wythe University with an elegant and stately campus reminiscent of the classical universities of the world.
SENSE OF PLACE thru implementation of timeless pattern language design principles in relation to size and placement of streets, buildings, homes, lighting, neighborhood commercial, village center, green courts, and more.
SENSE OF TASTE thru implementation of permaculture principles, local, sustainable food production, community gathering and cultural and artistic experiences at the community farm.
AREA HISTORY
As we gather to build and live in the Monticello, San Juan County area, we wish to learn from, honor and respect those whose lives and culture have so touched and shaped this land and its spirit.
An excerpt from McPherson’s “A History of San Juan County”, gives a glimpse into the fascinating and diverse happenings of this amazing area and its peoples:
No other county in Utah has a more colorful past than San Juan. An integral part of four corners history, this dramatic geographical region hosted Native American cultures . . Navajos, Utes, and Paiutes . . . Spanish, and later Mexican explorers and traders left an ephemeral legacy as they pushed thru an uncharted region of red rock, sagebrush and imposing mountains.
The area was also infused with a strong and permanent Euro-American influence from trappers and mountain men, Mormon settlers, US army expeditions, scientists, surveyors and famous explorers.
