The Matchlight Scholarship

Winter 2016 essay topic

This essay-based scholarship is sponsored and defined by a private donor and is open to full or part-time students (both those attending online as well as on-campus). It may be applied toward tuition for undergraduate or graduate student enrollment. Its inspiration was derived from the following poem:

Blessed is the match consumed in kindling flame.
Blessed is the flame that burns in the secret fastness of the heart.
Blessed is the heart with strength to stop its beating for honor's sake.
Blessed is the match consumed in kindling flame.

- Hannah Szenes

Scholarship Overview

Students may apply for this scholarship by submitting an essay and short personal biography.  The writer of the winning essay will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship applied directly to his or her on-campus, full-time tuition.

The scholarship winner will be chosen based on their essay (not their biography). The sponsor reserves the right to not award the scholarship if submitted essays do not meet their standards.

The Matchlight Scholarship is awarded to new or returning students each semester.

Renewable Supplement Scholarship

Additionally, all Matchlight Scholarship recipients are eligible for the Continuing Flame Scholarship of $250 each semester until he or she graduates (See Scholarship Details below). To be considered for this scholarship, each semester the student must write a letter to the sponsor outlining his or her progress during the previous semester.  Awards are made at the discretion of the sponsor.

Essay Subject and Guidelines

The essay subject for the Winter Semester 2016 scholarship is as follows:

Individuals and society are in a constant quest to move public opinion. The American social commentator Will Rogers said, "People's minds are changed through observation and not through argument." Do you agree or disagree? What is your reasoning, and what are the implications?
The winning essay will be inspiring and persuasive, not just informational. The length of the essay should be appropriate to the subject matter; there isn't a word count requirement.

Applicants must also submit a short personal biography, sharing his or her background and aspirations.

The qualifications and selection of recipients of the Matchlight and Continuing Flame scholarships are at the discretion of the scholarship’s sponsor.
