Salt Lake City Graduate Honors Course
Political Economy: Shaping the Modern World

January 22 – April 30, 2009
Mentored by Dr. Shane Schulthies

The world may be facing economic challenges greater that any since the Great Depression. Yet most people, including leaders in politics and business, don’t understand the basic economic principles that have shaped our current economic forms. Come join us in reading and discussing the great works in political economy that have not only shaped our past, but will have a huge impact on our future.

The core of this class will be comprised of the following works:

  • Adam Smith, Theory of Moral Sentiments
  • Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations
  • Karl Marx, Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts 1844
  • Fredric Bastiat, Economic Harmonies
  • Paul Samuelson, Economics (original 1948 version)
  • Ludwig von Mises, Human Action
  • Milton Friedman, Anna Schwartz: A Monetary History of the United States
  • Madison, Hamilton, and Jay: The Federalist Papers

Books will be avaiable through the GWU Bookstore as of December 1. All registered students recieve a 20% discount.

These selections are chosen because they have immense impact on the world today. Together they provide a foundational understanding of economics and include representations of the major schools of economic thought vying for acceptance today. To be a successful leader in the 21st Century one must understand these works.

Personal Mentoring:

In addition to the readings in Political Economy, each student will be personally mentored to help them achieve their personal goals. Each student will submit a personal study project that will include additional readings to increase their expertise in a chosen field, the development of skills necessary to accomplish their personal mission (i.e. learn a language, work on public speaking) or any personal adjustments in the curriculum.

Registration

Graduate student pricing is $4,495*. Doctoral student pricing is $4,995*. Professionals, executives and other members of the public may also register for $4,995.
