Overview

Our summer semesters run on an accelerated schedule from mid-May to mid-July. Full-time students attend about six hours of class each week, while part-time and class-by-class students meet less often depending on their course load. As with other semesters, all students work on the readings and assignments corresponding to their chosen courses.  When summer students attend class however, they are part of an interdisciplinary cohort of approximately 20-40 online students. In this group they will participate in mentor-led readingsquote-thread discussions, online study groups, and regularly touch base with their mentor through classroom participation, assignments and other interaction.

Tuition

For this summer only, undergraduates will be able to take up to 7 credits for only $550 in the part-time option, and up to 14 credits for $750 in the full-time option.

Part-time graduate students can take up to 6 credits for only $750, and full-time graduate students can take up to 12 credits for only $950. We regret that we are not able to offer special pricing and online options for our PhD students this summer.  Online programs for doctorate students will commence in the fall.

Students should plan on a combined class and study time of at least 3 hours per week per credit hour enrolled.  The first 40 students registered will be working with Dr. Shane Schulthies, one of our on-campus mentors. Other mentor assignments will be made depending on the number of registrations received.

Registration and Important Dates

  • May 11 - Deadline for Summer registration.
  • May 19 - Class begins: 6:00-8:30 pm MST.  This first part of the first class period will consist of an Online Technical Orientation. Students will be able to verify that computer equipment, internet connections and software are working properly. This will keep regular class time spent addressing technical issues to a minimum.
  • July 17 - Last day of class.

Classes will be held in the evenings from 6:00-8:30 MST on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with optional online student-led discussions at other times yet to be determined. Click here for more information on the technical requirements of the online program.

Our online registration system will not be available for a few more weeks.  In the interim, students should register by faxing, mailing (attn: Registrar), or emailing the completed registration form below:

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which courses to enroll in?

If this is your first semester at George Wythe University you should make your selections from the courses listed on our website, starting with the first semester of the first year.

Returning students will notice a change in our course designations and the quantity of classes being offered (although the number of credits required to graduate remains unchanged). Over the summer an online wizard will be made available to help students know which new requirements are satisfied by old course designations.

In the meantime, to identify the courses you should enroll in please review the curriculum (available online) and register for courses that cover materials you have not already studied. We will be monitoring registrations to ensure that students do not duplicate graduation requirements already completed.  Please feel confident that we will ensure that every student's graduation path will remain intact.  No student will be "set back" by the new course designations.  If after reviewing the curriculum you are still unsure about what courses to enroll in, please contact the office of the Registrar at (435) 586-6570.

Can I pay tuition on a payment plan?

All tuition payments must be made in full at the time of registration.  We will not be offering monthly payment plans this summer.  Click here for more information about changes to our tuition policies.

Can I stay with the old curriculum?

For the most part, the "new" curriculum simply represents a restructuring of the "old" curriculum to bring on and off-campus programs into better alignment and to divide the curriculum into more manageable chunks.  This is especially important to our former Distance Studies students who will find the online program more demanding in terms of class participation, out-of-class discussion and writing/publishing requirements.  There have also been some changes to the assigned readings.  The extent of these changes vary course by course and program by program.

I am about to graduate. How will this affect me?

If you are a student who has nearly completed your graduation requirements and you still have concerns after reviewing the new curriculum, please register for the most appropriate course(s) and then discuss your readings and assignments with your mentor.  It is fully our intention that these changes will augment and improve your George Wythe experience, not hamper it, and we are committed to working with our students to ensure that they get the quality educational experience they set out to get.  All credit already earned will be accounted for and accommodated in the new system.

How does this affect lump sum students?

"Lump sum" students are those who paid the cost of tuition under payment arrangements that are no longer available to the general public.  These agreements did not, of course, include use of George Wythe's online administrative services or online classroom environments, neither of which existed at the time.  While lump sum students do not have to pay the strict cost of credit, they are responsible for paying for these new services. This usually amounts to a relatively nominal charge.  Lump sum students should contact the office of the Registrar for specific pricing information.

I am not an accepted George Wythe student. Do I have time to apply?

Non-students are always welcome to audit George Wythe courses.  However, students desiring to earn credit for their coursework do need to be accepted into a degree program. So long as an auditing student applies during a given semester of enrollment, that student, if accepted, may earn credit toward their degree.  Summer 2009 students must apply no later than July 17.  It is recommend that students apply much earlier.

I already registered for the summer.  How do these change affect me?

We will be contacting all students who have already registered for the summer semester to help modify their enrollments appropriately.  Of course, the new (lower) tuition rates apply to these students as well as everyone else.  If you are one of these students you need not wait for us to contact you.  You are welcome to contact the office of the Registrar.

What if I can't attend all of the online class sessions?

At a minimum, students are expected to attend one class per semester per credit hour enrolled.  For example, a full-time student enrolled over the summer with 14 credits must attend at least 14 of the 16 online class sessions (2 sessions per week multiplied by eight weeks of class).  Although students may discuss exceptions and make-up options with their mentor, we encourage students to take seriously their commitment to gain an education and to coordinate their schedules to make the most of the program features available to them.

What equipment do I need to participate in the online program?

You will need access to a computer with an internet connection (the faster the connection speed the better but the program will work at any speed). You will also need a headset and microphone for use with your computer. A video camera is necessary if you would like to display video of yourself but is not required. For specific hardware and software requirements, please see the Elluminate User Guide for Participants.

Who do I talk to if I have additional questions?

We are more than happy to answer your questions and discuss your specific needs and concerns.  Please be aware that at present our staff is under a considerable load ensuring the online administrative and classroom processes are available for summer.  We encourage you to review the information that has been placed on the website, as most questions can be answered there, and then direct any remaining inquiries to the appropriate office (registrar, admissions, etc.).
